Key note: Training in virtual reality environments: hype or hope?

Virtual reality becomes increasingly popular in entertainment and social media applications. Merging the real world and the virtual world might also have an impact on the way we train personnel and educate students. This presentation gives an overview of the successes (and not-so-successes) in education and training and gives an overview of what virtual reality in training settings might be able to offer demonstrating some recent projects in the DAF Technology Lab, a virtual and mixed reality lab at the Tilburg University campus that is used for immersive education, innovative research and corporate partnerships.

Prof. Dr. Max M. Louwerse is Professor of Cognitive Psychology and Artificial Intelligence at Tilburg University. He received his PhD in Linguistics at the University of Edinburgh, and was Full Professor in Psychology and Intelligent Systems at the University of Memphis, where he also served as Director of the Institute for Intelligent Systems. He published over 120 journal articles, book chapters and conference proceedings on a diversity of topics, including intelligent tutoring systems, embodied conversational agents, multimodal communication, verbal and nonverbal communication, symbolic and embodied cognition, and language statistics. Louwerse is initiator and principal investigator of the DAF Technology Lab, a virtual and mixed reality lab for immersive education, innovative research and corporate partnerships. He received over 12 million euro in funding as a PI or Co-PI on projects investigating training in virtual and mixed reality (European Union, OP Zuid), multimodal communication in humans and agents (National Science Foundation), intelligent tutoring systems (NSF, DoD), electronic health record systems and medical informatics (NIH) and distributional semantics (US Intelligence Community). He served as president, treasurer and governing board member on international societies and serves on editorial boards of various journals in psychology, linguistics, and cognitive science. Louwerse holds a patent with another patent pending, and has received awards for his teaching and research. He currently works on a project with a European bank on user profiling and with 33 small and medium-sized companies on virtual reality.  09:30 - 10:45

Discover the value of video for Modern Workplace Learning.

Modern Workplace Learning (MWL) provides modern, relevant training and promotes everyday learning. In this workshop we will discuss the role of video (e.g. interactive video and employee generated content) within MWL.
Video is a powerful tool for Performance support, Knowledge Sharing and Social collaboration. Based on the model of Jane Hart we will look at different applications of video and how they help to create a learning culture.
- How do you stimulate Self-Directed Learning;
- How can you encourage Employee Generated Content;
- How can you increase the value of formal learning?
- How can L&D support the modern learner?
This session will inspire you with video practices of customers like ASML and DMG.

Note: This is a one hour workshop. For the remaining 30 minutes of the round you can visit the SonicFoundry stand in the 'Voorhof' (Auditorium) and discuss video for learning with one of their specialists.

Also, the Q&A session for the keynote: Training in virtual reality environments: hype or hope?  with Max Louwerse is accessible.

Or you can just grab a coffee and talk to friends and colleagues.

Design thinking: learning by creating

Design thinking is solving problems the way designers do, a different approach compared to prevailing analytic methods. The decisively human centered and solution oriented approach incites innovations, learning on the go what the problem is and what the solution. In this workshop you will experience:
-       What is design thinking?
-       What makes it different?
-       The pitfalls
Together we will explore the implications for organizations and learning professionals

The number one lesson from facilitating learning journeys: it’s all about change!

Much has been said about the changing role of the Learning and Development (L&D) function. But what does this mean for the Learning Professional?
In this workshop we will share what we learned for shifting the focus:
* from training to learning and performance
* from training event to Learning Journey
* Standardized to Personalized approach
We’ll show an actual case: the Business Partnership Program in Canon EMEA. With this example we will see:
* how L&D adds new value to the organisation
* that L&D offers a highly attractive environment for Learning Professionals to grow
* opportunity for Learning Professionals to stand out as a trusted advisor

Karel Haan – Learning and Development Canon EMEA

I’ve always been fascinated by the human side of change. Can we handle the exponential rate of change we see in the (business) world? To me the human factor of change is so important that I dedicated my professional career to it. At the end organisations don´t change but people do!
Learning and change go hand in hand. As part of the Learning and Development department of Canon EMEA I help people to gain knowledge and skills that enable them to change what they do and create more value for the organisation.
A combined function of consultant, program developer and facilitator.

Virtual simulations & Serious gaming

By using virtual simulations and serious gaming (with or without technology like Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality; Hololens) we help organizations with their training needs. Where these needs are large, dangerous or inaccessible, VR and AR are used to train effectively. This for both building comprehension prior to practical training (pre-practice training) and also during the practical training (on-the-job training).
Using a number of business cases I will do a quiz with you during the workshop. You can comment online on a number of statements which we then further discuss.
This way you will learn about gaming and what it can mean for your organization.

Gamification – Curiosity and enjoyment as the motor for learning. Design you own ‘Gameful DesignToolbox’ in an hour!

Fun is a great motivator.  And as we, learning and development professionals, focus on all forms of motivation in learnings situations, there are not many specialists in our field who specialize in designing fun in learning interventions. I think that we are missing out on that subject. In this workshop you create, in one hour, your own Gameful Design toolbox so you can start designing fun in every learning intervention you create. If you would like to prepare, this a good (6 minutes) read: https://www.gamified.uk/2013/06/05/gamification-user-types-and-the-4-keys-2-fun/
Hope to see you in Eindhoven!

 Know-how 2 Perform

Organisations are moving away from training delivery to a performance consulting model. Corporate Universities should deliver performer support into the workflow; just enough and just in time at the right place. Preventing that formal learning programs are needed before starting to perform. By performing a task we learn. Where else will you learn to perform?
We will discuss the supporting model and give some examples of best practices]
