DVG Event 2013 Roundtable Discussions*

Roundtables are interactive discussions on provocative topics moderated by a DVG host. The goal is to share experiences and learn from each other. The format is informal and participants are encouraged to share their views and position about the topic.


D1. Improve Personal Performance without training

Facilitators: Hans Ramakers

Recent research outcomes show that there is a difference between traditional students and the new generation of students in the way the brain works. Some suffer from a cognitive overload, while others seem to be perfectly able to multitask and switch in and out between many different information channels. These 'digital natives' will shortly enter into our workforce. This will affect what learning opportunities we offer and the way we organize L&D in our organisations.But there is more. There is also a need to speed up the delivery of new information and knowledge to our workforce. And while on one hand we want more employees to benefit from our L&D-offering, we also want to reach these new audiences at a lower cost. This puts pressure on L&D-professionals to be more creative, more entrepreneurial and more cost-conscious.

Short bio.

Hans Ramaker joined Philips Lighting as Director - Learning innovations and technology after several years learning experience at Toshiba medical systems and Philips Healthcare. In Philips Healthcare Hans became responsible for the global training delivery in healthcare informatics to internal medical- and technical employees as well as customers. Here the interest in the way of delivering knowledge and skills changed into delivering knowledge at the moment of need. During the two years at Philips Lighting Hans is organizing performance support events for other multinationals, create a new learning strategy for Philips Global and is creating, in cooperation with the i-know center, a Proof of Concept regarding performance support.

D2. The Future of Workplace Learning: how technology and datafication will influence learning and performance support

Facilitator: Ger Driessen

Technology has always played an important role in the way we organize learning. Nowadays it might sound strange but the abacus, book print and the chalk board were oncedisruptive technologies regarding learning. Technological development speed up
in an exponential pace as we know from underlying phenomena as ‘Moore’s Law’ and Kurzweil’s ‘Law of accelerating returns’. We all experience(d) this phenomena since we have the PC , the internet and social media. We are now evolving to ‘The internet of everything’ and the next big wave will be datafication (Big Data).

Let’s explore some questions during this Round Table Discussion:

  • How will these emerging technologies influence and change workplace learning and performance support?
  • What kind of scenario’s can we think off and how to prepare for new opportunities and benefit from them?
  • What do these changes mean for the role and ‘craftsmanship’ of the Learning & Development professional?
  • What kind of actual applications or experiments already exist (worldwide) an within the companies we represent?

Let’s share our views and ideas and invest some time thinking about the future. After all it’s the place where you will spent the rest of your life!

Ger Driesen is a Learning & Development professional with 20+ years of experience: 10 years internal (Stork, Fuji) and since 2000 as partner at Challenge Stretching Talent where his main focus is on design and delivery of Talent/Leadership Development programs, most for High Tech companies. In 2013 he won the Learning & Development Leadership award from the World HRD congress.

D3.Social Media

Facilitators: Jeroen Krouwels

Social media in a learning environment: most learning experiences arise in the interaction between people. Learning itself is a continuous process. Courses, offline or online are not. They are mostly based on content and timebased interaction in a classroom setting. Social Media can extend the communication between learners, can bring together experts and learners, and can be a huge knowledge database, created by co-workers. The main question is not: how do we make it available, but: how do we make it work?

Short bio

Jeroen Krouwels (1964) studied modern languages at Fontys Hogescholen but became co-founder and boardmember of PAT Learning Solutions, a leading e-learning company in Dutch Healthcare. He was also co-founder and director of the of the Dutch Association for Learning Technology (www.bvlt.nl). His expertise lies in the field of application of learning technology. Special interests are:

  • Workplace learning and assessment
  • Co-creation
  • The use of Social Media in learning


D4. Virtual reality in learning situations

Facilitator: Bauke de Vries

Bauke de Vries is Chair of the Design Systems group of the Faculty of Building and Architecture at Eindhoven University of Technology. His main research topics are: Computer Aided Architectural Design (CAAD), Product and Process Modelling, VR technology and Interfaces and Knowledge Based Systems. Bauke de Vries is author of publications that have been presented on international conferences and scientific articles that have been published in international journals. He was member of many PhD committees and project leader in European research projects.


D5. VR Experience

Facilitator: Jaap van den Bosch (Archidimex)

Virtual training helps our customers when training on real machines is too expensive, machines are not (yet) available or are located elsewhere on the globe. Creating a training is simple; existing 3D CAD data of the machine is loaded into the training software and the trainer defines the flexible procedure. This training can then be offered on various platforms, from fully immersive VR environments to 2D on a laptop. The trainer can be present at the training to guide the trainee, but also without him a training can be experienced. The possibilities are very extensive and adaptable to different goals.

We’re present with a virtual reality setup and a small demo training. Please stop by, immerse yourself and get some first-hand experience of what virtual reality can offer.

I’m happy to introduce myself, my name is Jaap van den Bosch and Virtual Reality is my profession. VR is used a lot in 3D movies nowadays, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg – also in your business it can be of great added value. After having worked at my American partner WorldViz, I founded Archidimex in the Netherlands with the aim to serve a broad range of customers with my knowledge, expertise and enthusiasm about virtual reality. I like to closely cooperate with customers to identify their exact needs and realize those with virtual reality applications.


Founded six years ago, Archidimex has established itself in the field of real-time virtual reality. Our conviction is that a message or knowledge can best be conveyed through a real experience. Not through websites, videos, images or textbooks, but by the user being in control his own experience. Knowledge through experience. We now bring this knowledge and expertise to our customers to lift training to the next – virtual – level.


D6. Video in Practice

Facilitator: Niec Himpens (Smart Video)

During this event sessions you can experience what it is like to create a short instructional video and receive advice on how to improve your camera presence. Niec will also provide 'pointers' on creating your own instructional video's if you are considering using video in you own training situation

Short bio

Niec is a professional videographer with years of experience creating video productions like corporate promo's, documentaries and event registrations. The past several years Niec has been involved with creating instructional video's mainly for the high tech industry.

D7. E-learning authoring tools: Camtasia, Storyline, Captivate & Moodle

Facilitators: Han Wijnands (ASML); Rohald Vermeulen (ASML); Guido Siebers (Marel Townsend Further Processing); Ton Dijkstra (Océ)

Short bio

Guido Siebers (Articulate Storyline) is a Learning & Development Specialist at Marel Townsend Further Processing. His main job responsibilities is designing and developing blended learning courses. Within the construction of e-learning courses he pays special attention to make creative and graphic solutions to explain and present the learning content.

Paul Wijnen (Articulate) is a multimedia designer who works for The Concept Store in Eindhoven. He has been active for Philips Healthcare for over 4 years now. He is stationed at the Philips Learning Academy in Best (Professor van Holst Center). There his team makes many eLearning courses in collaboration with subject matter experts. His team works together with  another team in the United States. Before this Paul mainly worked on animation and web design projects. Now he builds a lot of interactive productions for eLearning purposes. He has worked with all of the programs from Articulate and almost all of the programs from Adobe.

Han Wijnands(Captivate and Moodle) works already for many years for the ASML CS training department and is member of the Knowledge Management / Learning Methods team. He has a broad experience in course design / development activities with focus on e-learning productions. Han will demonstrate how Captivate is used as CBT development tool and how the end product is made available in the Moodle platform.

Rohald Vermeulen (Camtasia) is a graphic designer and a Camtasia expert. He is been involved with editing and developing the ASML weblectures from the beginning, three years ago. He will demonstrate how the weblectures are edited in Camtasia.

Ton Dijkstra is learning consultant, training developer and trainer at Océ Technologies B.V. Fields of expertise are physics, training and psychology. Ton trained colleagues from Paris to Chicago to conduct and develop training in a coaching way. He focuses always on: What do we want to see learners do? And does this make sense?


D8. SAP Productivity Pack

Facilitator: Hilde van der Wielen

SPP is an author environment especially suitable to create software simulations. In combination with SAP, context sensitive help can be enabled.  After a short demo you will have the opportunity for questions on SPP client and server.

Hilde van der Wielen, working for Philips Competence Group Learning since late 2008. Since that Competence Group learning was using SPP (Sap Productivity Pack also known as Ancile uPerform). Hilde has given multiple SPP Authoring courses, was the prime contact person for technical issues with the supplier and still is an author/ administrator in the application.
